The Electric Generations exhibition was launched at dlr LexIcon, Dún Laoghaire, Dublin, on 4 October 2017 by Cllr Tom Murphy, Cathaoirleach, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council. Following Cllr Murphy’s welcome, we were delighted to have speeches from Gerard Crowley, Senior Manager at ESB, and our guest speaker Dr Finola Kennedy, author of Cottage to Creche: A history of family change in Ireland. The curators from the University of Hertfordshire thanked the archivists at ESB, Institution of Engineering and Technology, and Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry for their invaluable help in making the exhibition happen, and expressed their gratitude to Marian Keyes, Senior Librarian at dlr LexIcon. Guests were then invited to peruse the information, advertisements, and objects on display, during which time discussion turned to people’s own memories of the fear, functionality and freedom of electricity in the home.
